So, you've likely come across or heard the term "brain fog," right?
It's that peculiar mental haze that messes with your thinking, memory, and concentration. But describing it? Well, that can be a bit of a head-scratcher. You might find yourself in brain fog territory if you're feeling tired, disoriented, spaced out, or like your thoughts are playing a game of hide and seek. Tasks seem to drag on forever, headaches pop up out of the blue, and memories decide to take an extended vacation.
But here's the thing:
Brain fog isn’t easily measurable. You won't spot it on a blood test, weigh it on a scale, or see it by just looking at someone. But, despite that, it’s a very real condition that can alter daily functioning.
The good news is, it's not just an inevitable part of aging like we once thought. There are numerous explanations for why brain fog occurs and it is rarely just one thing but rather a combination of many things. Once you identify the underlying cause or causes, epigenetic factors specific to you, you can begin fixing the problem.
Here are six possible culprits:
1. So Much Stress: Chronic stress is like your brain's arch-nemesis. It can mess with your blood pressure, weaken your immune system, and make thinking and focusing feel like climbing a mountain.
2. Sleep Troubles: If you're not getting enough quality sleep, your brain suffers. Shoot for a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Anything less can leave your brain feeling like it's wrapped in a foggy blanket.
3. Hormonal Roller Coaster: Hormones can also play tricks on your brain. During pregnancy, hormones like progesterone and estrogen go haywire and can make your memory a bit wonky. Menopause can bring on forgetfulness, reduced concentration, and mental haziness.
4. Dietary Drama: What you eat matters too. Vitamin B-12 is your brain's sidekick, and if it gets low, brain fog can swoop in. Food allergies or sensitivities can also lead to cognitive troubles. Cutting out potential trigger foods is ideal.
5. Medication Aftermath: Brain fog can sometimes hitch a ride with certain medications. If you suspect your meds are causing the trouble, have a chat with your healthcare provider. They might be able to adjust your dosage or switch you to a different option with less side effects.
6. Underlying Health Conditions: Brain fog is a common symptom from inflammation which we all know is the root cause of all disease. If you have a chronic condition or infection (this includes Lyme and coinfections) that has not been addressed, you have inflammation.
Depending on how thick the brain fog is, it can seriously disrupt your daily functioning. But here's the silver lining: you can give it the boot with a combo of better nutrition, lifestyle tweaks, and supplements to give your brain a boost.
Like I mentioned above, one of the major brain fog instigators is inflammation. While this can come from unaddressed conditions, it is also triggered by chomping down on sugary, overly processed foods. These foods feed the bad gut bacteria, and when those critters get out of control, it can lead to something called "leaky gut."
So, why do we care about gut status when we are addressing brain fog?
Well, because it's got a direct connection to "leaky brain" (aka brain fog). When your gut's out of whack, it messes with other parts of your body too. Your gut and your brain chat quite a bit, and your gut's doing 90% of the talking. So, making sure it’s in optimal condition is vital.
Now, if you know or suspect that you’ve got leaky gut, you might want to consider giving the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet, like what’s in the Personalized Paleo program, or a clean ketogenic diet, like what’s in the Kleaner Keto program, a whirl. They can help dial down inflammation, clearing up the brain fog in the process. Plus both dietary interventions will ensure that you are steering clear of gluten which is a top contributor to brain fog based on recent MRI studies. These studies showed that folks with non-celiac gluten sensitivity can get headaches, brain fog, and other wonky symptoms within 90 minutes of consuming gluten and it usually takes about 48 hours for things to get back to normal. Gluten’s ability to do this occurs in a couple of ways. First, it increases inflammation which as you’ve learned can cause leaky gut and brain issues. In addition, gluten can cause the blood-brain barrier, causing that "leaky brain" I mentioned earlier. And if that's not enough, gluten can interfere with nutrient absorption, like snatching up B12, iron, and omega-3s – all the good stuff your brain loves.
So, let's say you're game to try AIP or a clean keto diet. What else can you do to enhance your mental clarity through food?
1. Amp up your intake of animal products, especially liver, to boost your B12 levels.
2. Dive into fatty fish like salmon to load up on those brain-loving omega-3s.
3. Get friendly with veggies – aim for 4-7 cups a day. Spinach, avocados, asparagus, beets, blueberries, turmeric, broccoli, sardines, oranges, and green tea are like the VIPs of brain health.
But it's not just about what's on your plate; essential oils can lend a hand too. Try blending2 drops of Eucalyptus Radiata, 2 drops of Peppermint, and 1 drop of lemon essential oil in a diffuser. These oils ramp up brain function which is always welcomed, especially when you've got a big project on your hands.
When it comes to supplements, if you decide to take them, you’ll definitely want to start with a methylated B complex, cod liver oil for those omega-3s, and some probiotics to keep your gut in check. If you're not seeing improvements, think about supporting your detox pathways and neurotransmitters to dial down toxin levels. Oh, and don't forget about vitamin D – it's the budget-friendly vitamin. Just head outside for a bit!
Now, here's the scoop: vanquishing brain fog isn't just about changing your diet or popping some pills. To heal naturally it’s a bit of a long game that requires multiple modalities. So, here are a few more strategies, no food or supplements required, that will help with your chronic issues and their pesky symptoms, like brain fog:
1. Lock in 8 to 9 hours of qualitysleep – no shortcuts. Check out this great sleep freebie!!!
2. Tackle stress like a pro with journaling, grounding techniques, meditation, or getting lost in a good book.
3. Set boundaries with your electronics; they can be brain fog culprits too.
4. Easy on the alcohol and caffeine. Bandaids aren’t the answer.
5. Get moving with some regular exercise – your brain loves it.
6. Soak up that vitamin D by spending time outdoors.
7. Sharpen your mental game with puzzles and brain-teasers.
8. Find activities that let your creativity flow.
